The combined seventh and eighth-grade Thurston Middle School concert band won first place in its division and was recognized as overall best concert band at a competition that took place at San Diego’s Correia Middle School last month.

The band is led by Jon Mann, new to Thurston this year, but is in his 11th year of teaching. He also serves as adjunct faculty member at Hope International University.

The public has a chance to hear the award-winning repertoire during the band’s spring concert on June 3 at 6:30 p.m., taking place in the Artist’s Theatre at Laguna Beach High School.
