Breakers Capture Ninth Straight Title

Girls Volleyball (17-9, 8-0)

Laguna clinched their ninth straight league title this past Tuesday, Oct. 29, with a 26-24, 25-18, 25-21 sweep of a well-coached Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana squad at Dugger Gym. The Eagles held a steady lead in the first set until Laguna tied the score at 10. The teams went back and forth until it appeared Calvary would pull the upset leading 24-20 but the Breakers rallied behind Aspen Rocha to score six straight points to close out the initial win.  In the second set, Danielle Quirarte’s three aces and the blocking of Cameron Dorn, Kelsey Paul and Sabrina Stillwell was too much for the visitors.

Laguna somewhat struggled in the third set, finally pulling away down the stretch. Overall, Dorn earned top honors with 13 kills and six blocks. Stillwell added 10 kills and Quirarte was the top server with four service aces. Rocha dished out 22 assists and recorded 20 digs.

Laguna has now captured their 33rd title in the past 40 seasons and have an all-time league record of 365-40 (90.1%) for this period. 2014 will be Laguna’s 40th post-season appearance in the 42 years of CIF sponsored girls volleyball playoffs. Breakers have advanced to quarterfinals in 37 years, semifinals in 26, finals eleven times. Laguna has captured five section titles, last in 2007.
