High School AP and U.S. history teacher Kristin Cowles has been named teacher of the year by the Laguna Beach school district.

“Kristin is constantly searching for ways to make the subject matter interesting and personally relevant to students, and they appreciate that,” said Laguna Beach High School Principal Chris Herzfeld in a statement.

Superintendent Sherine Smith agreed. “She provides engaging and challenging lessons that prepare students for college and beyond. We are fortunate to have her as part of the LBUSD family,” Smith said.

Cowles, who described the honor as a “marvelous surprise,” is the offspring of parents and a grandmother who worked as teachers.

Cowles earned a bachelor degree in 20th century American history from UC Riverside and her master’s in secondary education from Claremont Graduate University.

An awards dinner and ceremony will be held at the Disneyland Hotel in November for all of the Orange County Teachers of the Year.
