Ted Doughty, director of facilities for Laguna Beach schools for the past two years, will retire, effective June 30, the district announced Monday.

Doughty’s retirement reflects continuing turnover among the district’s top ranks, which have included recent departures by the assistant superintendent and  directors of technology and human resources.

Doughty has worked for 40 years in construction and maintenance of educational facilities. His mother was a teacher, his father was a principal, and he’s been married for 32 years to an educator. He and Cinda plan to travel, exploring national parks.

“His leadership traits and industry knowledge provided our district with clear direction to elevate our standards throughout our operations,” Dean West, assistant superintendent of business services, said in a statement.

West credits Doughty with renovating Thurston Middle School’s cafeteria into a fresh and inviting venue. He also led the district’s emergency preparedness by coordinating with law enforcement, evaluating each site and adding safeguards, West said.

District administrators hope to hire a candidate in May, which would allow for a transition period in June.
