Football (2-3)
Quarterback Jack Simon directed a game-winning eight play, 80-yard drive to lift the Breakers to a 21-17 win over Sage Hill School in the first football meeting between the Newport Coast institution and Laguna. Breakers were not off the hook with Simon’s 28-yard touchdown run and still had to withstand a nerve-breaking nine-play and nearly three minute possession by the host school before claiming victory.
Breakers looked dominant early in the game, appearing to continue the strong play exhibited against Westminster the previous week. Laguna went 75 yards in nine plays on their first possession. George Cracknell continues to provide a bright spot for the 2015 team, connecting on his first of three extra-point tries to delight the large visitor contingent in attendance.
Laguna moved to a two-score lead on the first play of the second period as Simon threaded the Lightning secondary with a strike to Curtis Harrison, who took the ball the remaining 42 yards to the house for a 61-yard pass play.
After that, the Breakers could never generate decent field position and Sage gained more confidence. Once the Lightning tied the contest in the final seconds of the third quarter, Laguna drove 78 yards in nine plays, but missed on a 39-yard field goal try. Sage came right back for a 69-yard net drive, aided by a broken play 71-yard run. The run ended on the Laguna three yard line, but Sage could go no further. They lost five yards on a procedure penalty and another seven on a sack, which set up their go-ahead field goal with just over five minutes remaining. Breakers took the kick off and Simon hit Matt Hayes for 11 yards to start the winning drive.
Breakers are off this week and begin league play next Friday, Oct. 9 at Guyer Field, host to the Costa Mesa team, which appears to be No. 2 in the league. Mustangs lead the series 24-11 but the last 10 are evenly split at 5-5.
