Football (2-4, 0-1)
The final 32-7 score in favor of the visiting Godinez Grizzlies fails to reflect the game played Friday, Oct. 7, at Guyer Field.
The contest opened with Laguna moving 19 yards in four plays before a short yardage play resulted in a nine-yard loss on a scramble forcing a punt. Godinez took over and converted a key fourth down play on their way to a 13-play 62-yard drive for the first score. Breakers suffered a wild 31-yard snap on their next punt attempt that gave the Grizzlies the ball on the Breaker six-yard line. Four plays later it was 13-0 as the period ended.
Laguna opened the second period looking like they would tie the score as they drove 67 yards to the Grizzly 13 yard line, but were penalized for alleged sideline interference and suffered a loss of yardage. In the end, Laguna had to settle for a 32-yard field goal attempt that went wide. On the next Grizzly possession, Godinez was stopped on a fourth down play and Laguna took possession on the Godinez 29-yard line. Breakers failed to cash-in on this chance, too, as Harrison’s pass was intercepted near the goal line.
Laguna had only one possession in the third period and scored on a wild pass play as Ryan Blaser attempted to catch a 23-yard pass from Curtis Harrison, but had to literally steal the ball from a defender as they collided. He was then able to maintain his footing and race the remaining 41 yards for the score. After trading possessions, Godinez finally sealed the win scoring off a 65-yard drive midway through the final period. The key play on that drive was a broken play toss from the Grizzly end zone to avoid a safety that turned into a 49-yard pass play. The final two Godinez touchdowns were set up late in the game as Laguna turned the ball over on downs giving the visitors an easy two-yard and 41-yard drive.
