Baseball (1-6, 1-0)
After enduring six grueling non-league games against stronger competition, the Breakers returned to the comforts of league play this past Tuesday, March 15, with their opening contest of the 15-game schedule. Breakers used a five-run third inning outburst led by Jack Simon’s three-RBI double to defeat the visiting Estancia Eagles (5-3, 0-1).
The win extends their conference consecutive win-streak to 49, second longest in Southern Section CIF history.
Blake Burzell was the starting pitcher, lasting three batters into the fifth inning before being relieved by John Ogden, who retired the side. Odgen retired all three Estancia batters in the sixth inning while Will McInerny took care of the seventh.
Conner Basile’s solo home run that opened the third inning, the first Laguna home run hit at Skipper Carrillo Field in two years, provided the game highlight.
Last week Breakers completed their Newport Elks play on Wednesday and Thursday, March 9-10, losing by identical scores, 3-2, to Trabuco Hills and San Juan Hills.
League play continues at Godinez on Friday, March 18, and next week in Costa Mesa on Tuesday, March 22. Breakers will play a non-league contest against Sage Hill Wednesday, March 24, and will return to league play at Saddleback on Friday, March 25.
