Laguna Beach High School’s boys soccer team was awarded a wild card berth in the CIF play-offs and played El Segundo at home Tuesday, Feb. 14.

The playoff spot came as a result of a strong finish for the Breakers during the final three games of the regular season, which catapulted them into a tie for third place with last season’s league champion, Santa Ana’s Godinez High School.

After several one-goal losses earlier in the season, the momentum shifted for the Breakers on Feb. 2 with a 4-1 victory against Costa Mesa. The Breakers followed this effort with an unprecedented 1-0 victory against Godinez.

The biggest test came in the final game of the season, Feb. 7, against undefeated Saddleback High School’s Roadrunners. At the 67th minute, the Roadrunners scored just beyond the outstretched arms of the diving goalkeeper. In the remaining minutes, the Breakers tried valiantly to even the score with a volley of shots that just missed their target.

While short of a victory, the team’s effort apparently merited  consideration for the wild-card slot they ultimately received.
