Community leaders will gather at Crystal Cove State Park beach to dedicate a brass plaque honoring Jeannette Merrilees on Saturday, June 9 at 10 a.m.

Merrilees was the first activist in the fight to save beach cottages for use by the public as she believed Crystal Cove should be “a State Park for all Californians and future generations.” She also led and succeeded in other fights for parks in Orange County.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

As part of its 75thanniversary celebration, Neighborhood Church will present World Peace & Justice Weekend, a two-day series of events combining expert panel talks on  parenting, technology, ecology, recovery, peaceful resistance, and healthy aging, mixed with music, dance, a children’s workshop, chanting, meditation, an all-night sound bath and a Sunday benefit concert featuring three bands including the Moon Police.

“This is a chance to step away from acrimony and debate, to cut through unpleasantness and noise, and to reconnect with your inner compassion and thoughtfulness,” said Rev. Rodrick Echols, pastor of Neighborhood Church.

All events will be held at the church at 340 St. Ann’s Drive. Saturday passes are $20 for adults, $10 children 6-17, ages 5 & under free. The Sunday concert, which includes hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar, is $20 for adults 21 & older, $10 ages 12-20, ages 5 and under free. Proceeds from the weekend will support humanitarian aid, education, and social justice programs locally and worldwide.

LBPD to hold Road Safety Expo

The Laguna Beach Police Department will hold a Road Safety Expo on Sunday, June 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Robert Castillos’s BMX Freestyle team will perform at 11:30 a.m. and a vehicle extrication will be demonstrated by the Laguna Beach Fire Department at 12 p.m.

The event will also feature a skatepark, raffles, food trucks and more. It will be held in Parking Lot #11 at 551 Forest Avenue.
