Running for Fun and Fitness

Nearly 100 Top of the World Elementary students participated in the one-mile Kids Run the OC Marathon held at the Orange County Fairgrounds earlier this month.

The run culminated a 12-week fitness program to improve students’ speed, agility, hand-eye coordination, flexibility and overall fitness.

By the end, students had accumulated the equivalent of 25.2 miles in running the final mile at the event.

 

English-Learner Liaison Wins Kudos

The OC Education Department honored Javier Diaz, the Laguna Beach school district’s community liaison, at an awards celebration earlier this month.

The event recognized individuals from local school districts who have made noteworthy contributions in promoting success for English learner students.

Final Coffee Break Shifts to El Morro

Educator Vicki Hoefle brings her funny, common-sense approach to parenting to Laguna Beach’s PTA workshop Coffee Break, taking place at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, at El Morro Elementary.

Hoefle, author of “Duct Tape Parenting”, will show that by creating a trusting relationship with children, parents can shift from a fear-based style of micro-management to allowing children to unfold as responsible, resilient and respectful human beings.

Carpooling is recommended. Parking is available at Crystal Cove State Park with a pass that can be picked up at the El Morro front office. There is a $10 suggested donation at the door. books will be for sale.

 

Students Receive DAR Honors

Two students won cash awards from the local Patience Wright Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution last week.

Maya Eva Keces was the winner of the American History Essay Award. A musician who performs live throughout Orange County, she also dances and performs in theatre at Laguna Beach High School.

Haleigh Burnett was the recipient of the Good Citizenship Award. She is an AP and honors student, plays soccer and runs track and has been involved in LBHS’s Model United Nations debate program.

 

Pool Closes for Repairs

The public pool at Laguna Beach High School will temporarily close Monday, May 19, for maintenance.

The pool will re-open on June 9.

 

Military Recognizes Local Musician

The Army and Navy Academy, which recognizes accomplishments of outstanding bandsmen, announced that Laguna Beach’s Gregory White is the recipient of the Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Music Award.

 

American Legion Picks Their Winner

LBHS junior Anne Brown was chosen 2014 Girls State delegate by local American Legion Unit 222.

Anne is a member of National Honor Society and an athlete; she also tutors underachieving students in math and English. She is also involved in youth groups at her church and in community service projects that include Zero Trash Laguna Beach.

During a week-long conference in Claremont, delegates learn the process of building city, county and state governments.
