Collection of Classes Offered at Susi Q

The Susi Q Center is offering a variety of classes, discussions, and groups during the month of July.

On select Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. there will be a free science discussion group focusing on the issues, controversies, and societal impact of a variety of topics.

Conversational Spanish courses for those who enjoy the food, cinema, literature, music, and art of the Spanish speaking world will be held on Mondays through August 22. A placement test will be required to ensure that individuals are placed in the appropriate level.

On Wednesday mornings, free backgammon lessons will be lead by Efy Shirazi for all levels.

Taste interesting wines and learn secrets about pairing them with food in a class sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on Monday, July 18, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Once a month, the Susi Q is offering the chance to bring in an old or rare book and have them appraised by a long-time professional. The first appraisal will take place July 29 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.; a five book maximum per person each month will be in place.

During July and August, a second day of bingo will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on both Monday and Thursday.

 Computer assistance is offered Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Hearing aid service is available the first Thursday of every month from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and hearing screening the second Thursday of every month from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

 Stand up for Children

Tustin’s Miracles for Kids will hold a surf and paddle camp for patients who are facing life-threatening illnesses at Children’s Hospital of Orange County at Dana Point’s Baby Beach on select Thursdays through Aug. 25.

Instructors from surf shop Hobie and surfwear maker Billabong will teach participants surfing and stand up paddle surf activities and provide gear, said Tom Swanecamp, the camp’s founder.

 Transportation to and from both beaches will be provided by CHOC shuttles. Lunch will be provided by Chipotle and Sapphire Restaurant Laguna.  On Aug. 25, participants will also tour Dana Point’s Ocean Institute, near Baby Beach.

 

Ocean Institute Raffles a Dream Home  

In its seventh year, the Ocean Institute again begins its Laguna Beach Million Dollar Home Raffle.

Participants should enter by Sept. 14 to be eligible for the ocean view Laguna home or the $1 million cash grand prize.

By entering by Aug. 17, participants are eligible for extra cash and prizes including a stay at the Montage resort, a South Coast Plaza shopping spree or a Toyota Prius.
