Cross Country Runners Qualify for Finals

Breakers easily qualified both teams for the CIF finals in the qualifying races held last Saturday as the teams were among the top 24 in their enrollment division (D4). For the boys, it was their 20th straight year of making the finals which will be held Saturday in Riverside. Breakers were champions in 2009 and have finished second five times – 2005, 2006, 2008, 2013, and last year. The girls team qualified for the finals for the 15th straight year and need to finish in the top seven on Saturday to advance to the State finals the following weekend in Fresno. Girls Tennis (14-10)

Laguna rolled #1 seed Long Beach Wilson 11-7 on November 7 at Laguna but were unable to take down Huntington Beach (17-6) for the second time this year losing to the Oilers 10-8 in the CIF D3 finals last Friday, November 9 at the Claremont Club court. Ella Pachl and the doubles team of Vanessa Gee/Megan Mindt swept their matches in the effort for the Breakers best run since 2005.

Girls Volleyball (19-13)

Breakers run in the State D2 playoffs ended in a tough five set loss to the SSCIF D4 Champion Quartz Hill squad (39-7) last Thursday night, November 8 at Dugger Gym. Breakers won set one 25-19 on tough serving but the athletic Rebels from the high desert took sets two and three 25-15, 25-21. Breakers bounced back in set four 25-16 but could not carry the momentum into the final set. For the match, Piper Naess and Cambria Hall each had 20 kills, Laguna’s lone senior, Gretchen Webb added 9 while Ella Tyus had seven and Kendall Fraser added 5. Cambria Hall and Natalia Hagopian each had four service aces, Halle Carballo added to her season record digs with 30 while Soren Patchell had 27 assists and Hagopian 24. Team awards and a season recap will be included after the team banquet on November 27.

Boys Water Polo (19-12)

Laguna Finishes 7th in D1

Laguna Beach Boys Water Polo concluded their most challenging season in the program’s 55-year history with a 10-8 victory over the #7 seed Tritons on November 8 in a playoff contest held at Beckman High Pool as a home match for the Breakers. Breakers were down 3-1 after the initial period but battled back to take the lead for good in the second period. Zach Cord, Logan McCarroll, Colton Gregory and Will Clark each score two goals. James Nolan and William Kelly added single scores. Caden Capobianco was brilliant in the cage recording 13 saves. During the tournament the team learned the Southern Section would be changing their State playoff team selection process and only the top four schools in D1 would participate. The remaining slots for Southern Section teams would be awarded to teams winning the less competitive divisions.

Final D1 Standings: 1 – Harvard-Westlake, 2 – Newport Harbor – 3 Oaks Christian/Loyola (Playoff game ppd. to Nov 14), 5 – Santa Margarita, 6 – Mater Dei, 7 – Laguna Beach, 8 – San Clemente
