Mayumi Kawashima and Darius Kharabi

Mayumi Kawashima and Darius Kharabi of Laguna Beach are to be married July 30, 2011, by Pastor Dr. Mark Brewer at Bel Air Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Calif.

Kawashima, 31, was a senior consultant at a human capital consulting firm until December 2009, when she resigned to enroll in pre-requisites for nursing school. The bride-to-be had always felt a strong calling to help people, and will be starting her master’s degree at the UCLA School of Nursing. She graduated from New York University, where she studied finance and marketing.

Kharabi, 32, formerly a biotechnology licensing attorney, is director of program management at a start-up medical devices company. He holds a variety of responsibilities there, including in-product development, clinical, finance and legal. He graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University, where he studied biochemistry and received J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Stanford University.

With their diverse health-care backgrounds, the couple dream of starting their own company one day to improve human health.

The pair met at a New Year’s Eve party in Los Angeles in 2003 and were introduced by mutual friends. Since then, the two have lived in separate cities — she in Los Angeles and he in the Bay Area and San Diego. While the relationship grew, it wasn’t until 2009 when the pair were finally able to live in the same city, initially Santa Monica and then Laguna Beach, that they knew they were meant to be together forever.

The proposal was made at sunset last June on a north Laguna hilltop hike. The next day, the two bought an art tile from the Sawdust Art Festival that they plan to incorporate into their future home.

The couple enjoy travel and outdoor activity, and have recently visited South Africa and last month run in the San Diego Rock ‘n Roll marathon. Their cats, Meredith and Batman, are excited about the upcoming wedding!
