Breakers Run Past Stars 55-26
Laguna extended their win-streak with an easy rout of Mary Star of the Sea (0-4) at quaint Daniels Field in San Pedro last Friday. Once again, Laguna’s runners used the big play to roll to an early lead that saw the hosts use a running clock in the last period, limiting the game time for the Breaker reserves.
Game opened with Robbie McInerny kicking another touchback, his first of five for the evening giving the Stars the start on their own 20-yard line. Two hurried plays later, Breakers recovered a fumble on the Star’s 18-yard line and Laguna was underway. Norton Penney tallied the first touchdown set up on a great Larry Stewart to Travis Clawson pass play.
Mary Star went three plays for two yards on their next possession, punting the ball to the Laguna 45-yard line. Three plays later, Drake Martinez hit pay dirt on a 3-yard run after his 46-yard scamper fell short.
Stars showed some life going 75 yards in 12 plays to cut the lead to 14-7 but Penney quickly added another score with a 91-yard off-tackle run on the first play of Laguna’s third possession.
Breaker’s next score came early in the second period when Drake Martinez intercepted a pass on Laguna’s 22-yard line. Four plays of runs by Robert Clemons (40, 12 yards) and Martinez (3, 28) added a fourth touchdown in as many possessions. McInerney’s kick was blocked making the score 27-7.The Stars next possession lasted for seven plays but penalties dug them into a hole, forcing a punt that was downed on the Laguna 27-yard mark. Seconds later it was 34-7 as Martinez scored again this time for a 73-yard, one-play drive.
After the touchback kickoff, Stars scored their second touchdown on an 80-yard, 10-play drive. Breakers almost answered the scored again before halftime but ran out of time on the Star’s 6-yard line.
It was more of the same in the third quarter before the running clock limited the Stars to a nine-play drive for their last score. Laguna’s last possession had barely time for six plays before the game ended.

Up this week is a long bus ride on Friday to Jurupa Hills in Fontana. The Spartans are a new school lacking a senior class but should provide Laguna a stiffer battle in preparation for next week’s homecoming and league opener with defending champion Estancia, Oct. 14 at Guyer Field.
