Jackie Cenan hit for 33 points to lift Laguna to a 63-50 victory over Costa Mesa (11-9, 3-2) helping the Breakers keep pace with Estancia for the Orange Coast League lead. Breakers only led 33-32 at the intermission but key baskets by a very poised Nicole Davidson helped expand the lead. Alexandra Lewis hit back to back three-point shots to open the final period to seal the victory as Laguna controlled the final six minutes of the contest.

Laguna and Estancia met this past Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Eagle’s gym with the winner gaining the inside track for the league title. 2014 Breakers are already the third most successful Laguna girls basketball squad in the past 40 years.

Last week, Laguna defeated Godinez (6-15, 3-2) 43-38 at the Grizzly campus for only their second series victory in the 12 games between the two schools. Jane Wallin scored 16 points and Alexandra Lewis added 14 for the Breakers. The Godinez defense held top scorer Jackie Cenan to a season low three points but a hot hand by Wallin and Lewis kept the Breakers in the lead from the start to finish.

Next week Laguna hosts Saddleback on Tuesday and Godinez on Thursday, Feb. 4 and 6, respectively, tip off at 6 p.m. at Dugger Gym.

Boys Soccer (5-5-4, 2-1-1)

Last Friday Laguna battled the division’s # 3 team, Godinez, to a 0-0 tie at Guyer Field keeping Laguna just 1 point behind the league leaders with six games remaining.

Coach Daniel Richards noted, “We definitely rode our luck at times and I’m sure Godinez was frustrated with not getting a win. The lads defensive work rate and overall team shape was very good and the players were all willing to give that extra effort to keep the shut out. Dante (Amodeo) made some great stops in goal along with some strong blocks by our back line.”

The league awards one point for a tie but three points for each win. Last Wednesday, Jan. 22, Laguna trashed Calvary Chapel 3-1 at Centennial Park in Santa Ana. Chris Tellez scored twice after Charlie’s Warner’s initial goal.

Breakers hosted Costa Mesa (1-9-1, 1-3) this past Wednesday and travel to Estancia this Friday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.  for a rematch with the league leader (9-3-4, 2-0-2). The Eagles last second score handed Laguna their only league setback.

Girls Soccer (8-5-3, 3-1-1)

Laguna completed the first half of league play with a 3-0 home field win over Costa Mesa this past Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Guyer Field. Breakers are currently in second place and faced league leader Estancia this past Thursday at the Eagles home field. On Thursday, Jan. 23, Laguna defeated Godinez at Centennial Park 1-0 as Tessa Hopper scored in the 50th minute to rally Laguna past the host Grizzlies. Kara Dunne-Dombrink did a great job substituting for injured keeper Kylie George.
