SPRING SPORTS UPDATE

 

BASEBALL (5-10-1, 0-3)

April 5 – Laguna 11, Esperanza 4 (Ryan Lemmon Tournament)

The Breakers scored six runs in the first inning to coast past the Aztecs in a tournament contest played at Irvine’s Great Park. Laguna banged out 10 hits with Colin Kidd, Joey Capobianco and Shea Blanchard each with two hits, with Blanchard getting four runs-batted-in. Kidd picked up the win with Becker Sybirski throwing two 1/3 innings of relief, striking out seven.

 

April 11 – Newport 3, Laguna 1

Tars scored two runs in the first inning, aided by an error as the Sailors won in a contest played at Newport. Griffin Naess took the loss giving up four hits, and one earned run. Naess has given up only one earned run in 32 innings of work this season.

The Breakers will host Esperanza in a non-league game on April 15 and start their three-game series with Marina (8-10) next week. Full player and team Stats are posted on the Max Preps website. 

 

BOYS GOLF (3-7, 0-3)

Laguna shot their best score of the season but lost a non-league match to Corona del Mar 184-224 on April 5 at the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Country Club. Russell Franconi-Krychman shot the best score for Laguna with a 41, with Ranen Seeck-45, Davis Dix-45, Chase Tyson-46, and Evan Kretschmer-47.

The following day, Laguna lost another non-league contest to Marina 204-237 at El Niguel with Freshman Kiyan Arshadi leading the Breakers with a 44 for nine holes.

 

GIRLS LACROSSE (7-4, 0-2)

Laguna lost their second straight Sunset contest dropping a 16-6 match to Newport Harbor (8-2, 1-1) on April 6 at Guyer Field. Laguna travels to Edison on April 18 and Huntington Beach on April 20.

 

GIRLS BEACH VOLLEYBALL (8-4, 3-3) – Sunset Surf League 2nd Place – Qualified 

The Breakers schedule to play Orange League champs – St. Margaret’s on April 18 as the squad prepares for the first SSCIF playoffs scheduled to start about April 25. The playoff schedule and pairings will be released on April 22 at www.cifss.org.

 

BOYS TENNIS (1-12, 0-3)

Laguna surprised short-handed Fountain Valley 11-7 on April 6 at the Baron’s courts with Chris Herkins, Nick Moore and Owen Britt sweeping singles for Laguna. League play resumes on April 17 with Huntington Beach.

 

SWIMMING

There were no meets this past week due to spring break. The final dual meet is April 18, when Laguna hosts Edison.

 

TRACK and FIELD

The Breakers were swamped in their final league dual meet of the season with Huntington Beach defeating Laguna 96-29 (boys) and 73-42 (girls).

4 x 100 Relay: Laguna 52.49

4 x 400 Relay: Laguna 4:25.10

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL (0-15, 0-5)

Laguna dropped a league match at Fountain Valley on April 6, falling 25-17, 25-15, and 25-18 to the Barons (20-5). On April 11, Laguna lost a four-set match at Capistrano Valley Christian despite 20 kills by Jake Mauro and great passing by Lucas McKibben. The Breakers should finally earn some wins this weekend at the Garden Grove tournament.
