BOYS BASKETBALL (0-2, 7-17)

Laguna’s 5-game losing streak ended on Jan. 18 as the Breakers easily defeated Huntington Beach 70-57 at Dugger Gym in the 40th meeting between the two schools. Jack Halvorson had 19 points, Ryan Cheng shot 18 points, and Dylan McEachern had 15 points. Laguna has now won seven straight from the Oilers.

Last Friday, the Breakers were no match for Los Alamitos (17-6), losing 52-42 to the D-1 school.

GIRLS BASKETBALL (2-1, 18-6) 

Fountain Valley (11-14) defeated Laguna 49-38 in a non-league game on Jan. 23 at the Baron’s gym. Sophie Mariner led Laguna with 15 points and 17 rebounds, while Kate Cheng added 10 points. The regular season concludes on Feb. 1 with Edison at Dugger Gym.

BOYS SOCCER (1-1-0, 5-7-0)

Laguna defeats Corona del Mar

Laguna used goals from Caleb Holm, Julian Riechel and Jaxson Hutcheon to defeat Corona del Mar (8-5-3) by a 3-2 score last Friday, Jan. 20, at Guyer Field. Earlier in the week, Laguna lost a 2-0 league game at Fountain Valley.

This past week they had a non-league match with Huntington Beach and host Marina in a league contest on Friday, Jan. 27, at Guyer Field. The final home league game is on Feb. 1 against Fountain Valley. 

GIRLS SOCCER (2-0-1, 5-8-4)

Laguna dropped a pair of non-league games, losing 5-0 at Los Alamitos on Jan. 19 and 1-0 at Newport Harbor on Jan. 24. The second half of league play resumed on Jan. 26 at Corona del Mar and will conclude with Marina on Jan. 30 and Fountain Valley on Feb. 1.

GIRLS WATER POLO (13-6)

Team Effort Leads Breakers past Newport 8-5

Girls Water Polo continued on their Sunset Surf League title quest as the Breakers dismantled Newport in a “home” league game played at Los Alamitos High School on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Cleo Washer scored first off a pass by Myha Pinto barely 90 seconds into the contest to open the scoring. Newport battled back to tie the game entering the break, but early in the third period, Kara Carver scored on a power play, and Laguna never looked back, pulling away in the final period. Lauren Short had a great third period providing the assist to Carver, then scoring herself on the next possession. 

Ava Knepper also had an outstanding day with five drawn exclusions, a goal, an assist, and a steal. Breakers will meet Los Alamitos on Feb. 2 for the deciding league game for the title at a location still to be confirmed.

Last Saturday, Laguna defeated Corona Del Mar 12-10 in a non-league contest at the Sea Queen’s pool. The Breakers struggled to take control of the game until late in the third period when Ave Knepper scored off a Presley Jones pass to take a 7-6 advantage at 1:44 remaining in the quarter. From then on, the win was never in doubt as the Breakers have now defeated Corona del Mar. 21 times in a row dating back over ten years.

On Jan. 19, Laguna easily defeated Huntington Beach 16-3 in a league contest played at Newport Harbor. Natasha Denny stepped in as goalie with six saves, and Laguna had goals from 10 different players.

This weekend the Breakers are in the 8-team Newport Invite with games scheduled with Mater Dei, Carlsbad and Foothill in pool play. 

The Breakers will face the #1 ranked Knights on Friday, Jan. 27, at 4:40 p.m. at Newport Harbor.
