Breakers Drop League Opener, 36-10

Breakers quest for another league title was derailed last Friday at Jim Scott Stadium in Costa Mesa as an energetic Estancia squad was determined from their first play to earn their first Orange Coast League victory over the Breakers since the league was formed five years ago.

The Eagles took the opening drive on an eight-play, 74-yard possession to earn the first score with 8:45 remaining in the quarter. The Breakers first try was a feeble three plays and punt as the aggressive home team kept up the pressure.  Eagles got the ball back and rolled 54 yards in another eight plays to take a 15-0 lead after a two-point conversion run.

Laguna finally got in the game, moving the ball 54 yards in 12 plays to the Estancia 12 yard line before the drive stalled and Austin Paxson nailed his second field goal of the season.

After holding the Eagles, Laguna got the ball back and appeared to be moving to get back in the game but their quest fell apart in mid-field, forced to punt after eight plays. Estancia responded with an eight-play, 79-yard drive, all on the ground, for their third score near the end of the half.

Breakers never threatened in the third period and picked up their only touchdown on a 17-yard toss from Paxson to Derek Reigel near midway in the fourth period.

The defensive hit of the game was Taylor Preston’s punt coverage that stopped Estancia cold in the second quarter.

Breakers host their 55th homecoming tonight, Friday, Oct. 22, at Guyer Field against always tough Calvary Chapel. Calvary leads the series 9-5-2 and has been playing tough football with a 5-1 record so far. In common opponents, both lost to Ocean View, Calvary 28-7, Laguna 36-14. Breakers must find a way to stop the Eagles top player, Brandon Perez who is averaging 115 yards per game in rushing and 39 yards per game receiving. Laguna must find a way to win at least two of the remaining four games if they still have post-season aspirations.
