Letter: Playing Their Game

The shocking thing about Liberate Laguna is that it took us 46 years to push back against the original PAC that has dominated since 1976. Village Laguna pumps thousands of dollars into the local election cycle each year, about $40,000 per election cycle generated by the annual Charm House Tour.

Village Laguna is now angry that somebody else has started to play their game – and is beating them at it. VL has maintained a stranglehold on our city for decades, and the result is a downtrodden downtown with 100 empty storefronts and counting because their favorite answer to innovation or improvements is “no.”

We have lived in Laguna for 27 years and we still are debating the same issues as when we moved here. It is time to move forward.

Liberate Laguna is not about “big developers” or bulldozing our history or tearing out trees.

That is not what is going on here. It’s about agreeing on a commonsense approach to keeping our city viable as it faces a daunting gamut of challenges. “No” doesn’t fix anything. These challenges require a thoughtful response, nimble leadership, and a depth of knowledge that I don’t see exhibited in the Village Laguna PAC’s candidate George Weiss. Weiss does not have the breadth of experience, acumen or education to lead us through the next four years

My family and I will cast our votes for the problem solvers on the ballot – Larry Nokes and Mayor Bob Whalen.
