Karen Ziegler

1944-2010

Karen Ziegler, our beloved grandmother, mother, friend, bookseller, volunteer, liberal, pacifist, dog lover (especially Tess), passed away at the age of 66 on Oct. 10 in Laguna Beach.

Ziegler lived a full life and loved literature, music, the beach, good food and wine, walking through Laguna, Scrabble, gardens, New York cIty, the New York Times, a good bargain, the single payer health care model, and most of all her grandchildren Louisa and Anna.

She will be sorely missed by them, her son, Tim, and daughter and best friend, Maia, by their partners, Mary and Bruce, her brother David, and by countless friends and family.  We will keep her in our hearts always.

Friends and family will gather to celebrate her life Saturday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m. at Shaw’s Cove, one of her favorite places.

Mary Wilson Foster

1930-2010

Mary Wilson Foster, born in Oklahoma City, Okla., on June 9, 1930, passed away suddenly on Sept. 5, in Lake Forest. She was 80.

Foster married in 1952 and had two sons, David and Alan. Her talents drew her in many directions, including making dolls sold at Nordstrom’s and decorating wedding cakes. She and Alan lavishly decorated their home for the holidays, which was featured in several magazine and newspaper articles over the years.

Foster’s life was spent dedicated to the care of her younger son, Alan, who was born with special needs and was the light of her life. Mary and Alan lived in Laguna for several years and were a common sight in town, making friends with everyone they met.

Foster’s love for animals was reflected in her many rescued pets, which included dogs, cats and an owl named Mr. Brown.

Foster is survived by her two sons David Joseph Foster of Benton, Ky., and Alan Foster of Laguna Woods, who is well cared for in a small group home and will soon start attending a day program. He’s looking forward to enrolling in “school,” something he’s always wanted.

A memorial service honoring Foster is planned for Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Cross, 24231 El Toro Road, in Laguna Woods.

(These are paid announcements.)
