Pool Owners Should Take Measures to Curb Water Usage

Editor,

Re: Rosemary Boyd’s letter (in the April 10 edition of the Coastline Pilot) suggesting a pool and spa moratorium, at least during the drought.

I don’t see any reason that the city could not mandate pool and spa covers for all existing pools and spas. Yes, it could be expensive, but so are many other municipal improvements for which homeowners are required to pay – sewer improvements, undergrounding, etc. – and a quick Google review unearthed many different types at reasonable prices, including ones to cover irregular shaped pools.

Also, at the Design Review Board hearing of April 9, board member Monica Simpson made reference to a “liquid pool cover” she had researched, also reasonable and also functional for any shape pool or spa.

With due respect for Rosemary, a moratorium would affect only the very few new pools being built; a cover mandate (pun intended) would cover the many more existing pools and spas in Laguna Beach
