Who Is Next?

Editor,

We love drums and music! The high and mighty Laguna Beach city government has apparently ended the monthly full moon drum circle at Aliso Beach, although that is the perfect place for it with legal fire rings, a tunnel to more parking east of Coast Highway and no drumming after 10 p.m.

Billy Fried, one of the “elders” of the group says it so well: “We decided nighttime under a full moon, was the right time. This was in the not-so-distant past when Laguna was a kinder, more tolerant place.

“This was a special gathering from the start. Not only was the drumming tight, but the confluence of sand, stars, surf, fire and moon light made it metaphysical — spiritual as any church.”

No question, gentrification is wrecking this wonderful town.

On a post card distributed recently, the message was “Save the date – Blue Water Music Festival – March 28-29.” City government almost ruined that gathering with their almost-impossible permit process. And Mayor Bob Whalen had to step in and save the event.

I thought government was of the people, by the people, for the people and we have the right to pursue happiness and as Billy Fried says, “Freedom to assemble is a basic right, provided the assemblage doesn’t get too large.”

Who will city government go after next? What do you think?
