More than 100 people attended the kickoff party for the 10th annual Relay For Life last week, raising $1,100 and registering seven more teams in preparation for Aug. 6 event at El Morro Elementary.
Julie Pendleton, a 25-year resident diagnosed last year with ovarian cancer, was named this year’s honoree and relay queen, relay chair Lauren Harris announced.
This year’s goal is to surpass 2005’s all-time donation record in Laguna of $191,000 and to register more than 38 teams, Harris said. Team registration costs $25 until May 31 and then climbs to $125.
This year’s theme is “Color a Cure,” with each color representing a different cancer. Guests also took part in decorating a mural that will be displayed at the event.
