A special Laguna Beach resident has passed away.

Shirley “Shirl” Abel was born March 4, 1927, and died on Jan. 11, 2016, at the age of 88.

For the most part of 55 years she lived in and loved Laguna. So many local friends and an extended family will sincerely miss her.

She was married for 22 years to a great guy, Mogens Abel. Over the years the Abel family has included Shirl in monthly breakfasts, holiday parties and their famous smorgasbord for which we are most grateful.

Shirl and her “posse”of local friends frequented the local watering holes in Laguna. As many of them closed she continued to be a regular at GG‛s Bistro. The entire Gundogar family, GG‛s owners, were special friends.

Her BFF in town, Vic Ireland, wore many hats while accompanying Shirl around the city. He was her driver, her date on some occasions, her confidant, and he insisted on carrying her purse for her. What a guy! We will be forever grateful to him.

A special mention of her good friend and gambling buddy, Cat. Trips to Pala Casino were a must. She won occasionally but usually “lost another farm” as we called it. It was her favorite pastime for several years.

Others in Laguna need to be mentioned, too. Before retiring recently, her pal Eddie Boring was the pharmacist at Bushard’s. They were long-time friends and he, as well as the current staff there, were always so kind and accommodating.

So many friends and acquaintances to remember.

Cuz Marilyn and buddy GG, Jackie and Dorothy, and many others.

Shirl leaves her two favorite daughters, Susan and Nadine, as well as their husbands, Mike and Keith; her only granddaughter Allison, who will miss her so much; her brother Bob; Peg, two nieces and one nephew.

No services are planned as she requested. I am sure her family, her posse and close friends will get together to celebrate her life in a manner she would heartily
