Breakers attempted to compete as a club team last week in the rain-hammered 33rd annual Mid-Pacific Institute Baseball Tournament in Honolulu. The squad did get a few games in to prepare for this week’s season opener in the Costa Mesa division of the 30th Annual Newport Elks Tournament along with Calvary Chapel and Estancia. Last year Laguna went 3-2 in the tournament but won the division in 2011 with a 5-0 sweep. Breakers are participating in the four-division event for the 19th consecutive year.

Boys Tennis (0-2)

Laguna opened their 79th season with a 14-4 loss at San Clemente on Monday, Feb. 25. Teague Hamilton swept the Tritons in singles with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Morgan Lebby earned the only other point with a 7-6 win against San Clemente’s number two singles player. On Tuesday, Breakers lost 11-7 to Crean Lutheran.

Boys Volleyball (1-0)

Laguna Beach d. Edison 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-12

Laguna opened their 42nd season with a strong performance against Edison this past Tuesday, Feb. 26 at Dugger Gym. The match was the third consecutive season the Breakers have opened with a win over the Chargers who still hold a 9-7 series edge.  Laguna used a balance attack with Weston Barnes leading with 15 kills followed by Jackson Pries with 13, and Maxx McCarter adding 10. Jack Wyett added five kills and seven seven digs, JP Wollam handled the libero position with nine digs and four assists. Alec Wulff came off the bench with some sharp passing and three kills. Grif Fair handled the setting with 45 assists and great serving with four aces. Laguna is stronger and deeper in positions than past seasons. The next big test is Friday, March 1 when Laguna travels to Newport Harbor for a 5:45 match. Laguna is off until March 13 when they travel to San Clemente for a match and will participate in the 40th Orange County Championships on March 15-17. Corona del Mar comes to Dugger Gym on Wednesday, March 20.

Darren Utterback, last year’s OC Register Boys Volleyball Coach of the Year, made his Laguna debut as the JV coach this season. His talented squad defeated Edison 25-13, 27-25 and should be one of the top teams in the OC.
