Andrew Palmer fired a 154 to finish third at the 2011 Golden West League Individual Tournament played last week, May 2 and 4. Jake Knapp of Estancia repeated as champion with a 136 followed by Nolan Troy of Ocean View at 153. Tim Peterson of the Breakers finished fifth at 157.

Softball Playoffs?
Breakers’ hope for a CIF playoff spot comes down to last Tuesday’s game with Costa Mesa that was played at Thurston. The Mustangs and the Breakers entered the contest both with 4-4 league marks, two games behind second place Godinez.  The Mustangs (6-15) close out their schedule with Estancia (5-18, 2-6) while Laguna finishes with Saddleback (0-11, 0-8). Mesa edged Laguna 8-7 back on April 25.

If a playoff game is necessary, it will be played today, Friday, May 13, to determine the league’s third place representative to the Southern Section Division V playoffs. Last week Laguna lost a pair of games losing to Calvary 11-1, and Godinez 8-4. The program’s only CIF playoff game was a 4-0 loss to Torrance in 1990. Laguna has lost two league playoffs for third place dropping a 6-5 contest to Orange in 1987 and 3-1 to University in 1996. The 2011 Breakers are a young squad, hoping to start a new era this season with a playoff bid.
