Thurston Middle School now offers a Core Academy elective, designed to assist students to develop study habits that apply to all fields of academic study, says a district statement.

Math teachers Katie Meyers and Kelly Skon, language arts teachers Leah Prettyman and Sarah Schaeffer, and English language development and French teacher Randi Beckley teach the course. The collaborative approach includes a flexible weekly schedule with targeted instruction individualized to each student’s learning needs.

On Mondays and Tuesdays, students receive direct instruction in reading and writing strategies, time management, organizational skills, college and career readiness, and other topics.

On Wednesdays, students have weekly teacher conferences and prep time for classroom assignments. Targeted instruction and enrichment activities are scheduled for Thursday’s block schedule. Options include Angles and Equations, Finding the Least Common Denominator and Google Docs.
