The Thurston Middle School Division 1 surf team took second place this past weekend at the National Scholastic Surfing Association state championship at Church Beach at San Onofre.
This was the first time Thurston has entered a team, and their second place finish has qualified them for the national competition to be held in June at Salt Creek Beach.
Nine Thurston students competed including the standout performances by Kayla Coscino and Kelly Smith, who took second and third, respectively, in girls shortboard.
Boys in the shortboard heats included Travis Booth, Trey Lockhart, Liam McCue, Kiko Nelsen, Sam Nelsen and Nolan Rodgers; and on longboard, Jameson Roller.
The team is coached by Jeff Booth and Bobby Lockhart.
