Beer and Hymns OC, a musical group, will lead the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, Aug. 16, at Laguna Beach United Methodist Church, 21632 Wesley Dr. A barbecue lunch and root beer follows.
Performers Kristen Howerton, Chad Markley and Tim Taber are not pastors, but have been worship leaders at various churches. They have led sing-alongs at local bars featuring old and new hymns and camp songs without preaching, says a statement.
For Rev. Mandy Flemming, the group is recognition of a shift underway. “It’s changing. The metamorphosis of the church and the way in which we gather and worship means that we have to adapt to how we do our sacred work, because God cannot be contained in a box or tent or temple,” she said in a statement.Firebrand Media LLC wants comments that advance the discussion, and we need your help to accomplish this mission.
