The Eco-Warrior Foundation completed it’s first in a planned series of upstream clean ups in the Aliso Creek watershed last month.

More than 60 volunteers removed 550 pounds of trash from Sulfur Creek, Narco Channel, Laguna Niguel Lake and Aliso Creek, preventing the first major winter rain from flushing the accumulated debris into the ocean, James Pribram, founder of the Laguna Beach-based organization, said in a statement.

Supporting organizations included OC Parks, The Ranch, REI, YMCA of Laguna Niguel and Quiksilver.

Going to the Beach Can Count as Community Service

The Blue Water Green Earth Foundation invites volunteers to help keep local beaches clean.

So far eight coast-close businesses, including Thalia Street Surf Shop in Laguna Beach, have agreed to serve as Blue Water Stations, stocking cleanup kits of gloves, bags and necessary paperwork for student volunteers to pitch in and log community service hours.

The program is a new way to educate students about ocean protection and satisfies the graduation requirements for high school students, local Rick Conkey, founder of Blue Water Green Earth, said in a statement. “We’ve made it as simple as a trash bag and a trip to the beach.”
