Thieves Stung in Bee Theft

Newport police arrested a Nevada man on Wednesday who used his own cell phone to video himself swiping a stuffed bee from the Don’t Worry Be Happy Foundation store in Laguna Beach.

The man and his three companions were detained at gunpoint in the parking lot of Newport Beach’s Baja Fresh, where their vehicle was spotted, said Laguna Beach police Lt. Jason Kravetz.

The initial caller described a struggle over the stuffed animal, which is why it was classified as a robbery, Kravetz said. Newport police were notified the suspect vehicle headed north from 1042 N. Coast Highway. “After interviewing everyone involved, it boiled down to a petty theft only,” he said.

The occupants were detained until the victim, operator of the store that donates part of its proceeds to cancer groups, identified the suspect., Kravetz said. The stuffed bee was recovered in the back seat of the visitors’ vehicle.

Sebastian Montes, 21, of Henderson, Nev., was cited for petty theft, Kravetz said.
