Breakers Host League Favorite

For the first time in 43 years, Laguna Beach takes an undefeated record into their annual homecoming game, this Friday, Oct. 15.

Unlike the easy opponent some schools schedule for the annual event, the Breakers face Costa Mesa’s Estancia, (3-2), their toughest contest of the season. The winner will hold the inside track for the league title.  The school’s homecoming record stands at 19 wins, 35 losses and 11 ties.

Arrive early to avoid long lines before the 7 p.m. kickoff. Tickets are $8 for adults, $3 for children. Make use of parking available in the district lot off Park Avenue.

Estancia, the defending league champion, recorded narrow losses this season against University and Beckman. The Eagles will be the toughest defensive opponent for the Breakers this season. The team is lead by No. 43 Robert Murtha, a junior, 5’ 9” 170 lb running back who was the league’s offensive player of the year as a sophomore. He ran for 185 yards verses University, 183 yards in a win over Northwood but was held to 67 yards by Beckman. Stopping Murtha and the Eagle’s other back, No. 28 Alex Trancoso will be the challenge for Mike Churchill’s squad.

The Breakers (5-0) – Who to look for:
# 36  Taylor Martinez (Jr)  RB/DB has rushed for 861 yards, 13 touchdowns
# 3     Robert Clemons III (Jr) RB/LB has rushed for 332 yards
