Skipper Carrillo, the local baseball icon who coined the phrase “Have a home run day,” will sign books with his sister, author Alice Rowe, at The Sawdust Festival Thursday, Aug. 21, from 6 to 10 p.m., says the festivalʼs general manager, Tom Klingenmeier.

“Have a Home Run Day” describes the life of Carrillo, known for wearing a different baseball uniform daily, loyally attending youth athletic events, and peppering his speech with baseball trivia and terminology. Carrillo is the namesake of the high school field.

“Skipper Carrillo is the extraordinary man known as ʻMr. Home Run Day.ʼ Born prematurely, Skipper grew up with a disability that gave him a unique ability to express love with a pure heart and spirit,” wrote Dr. Gary Arthur on the back cover of the book, available at Tuvalu and Laguna Beach Books.
