Baseball Now 20-2

Breakers Crush Grizzlies 18-2

Tough pitching and strong bats led Laguna to another league romp defeating Godinez this past Tuesday, April 26,  at the loser’s field in Santa Ana. The victory clinched a CIF playoff spot for the Breakers who now are hoping to capture their first league title in 48 years when they host Costa Mesa this coming Tuesday, May 3, at Skipper Carrillo Field on the Laguna campus.

Keaton Jones started the Tuesday onslaught with a leadoff triple in the first and Godinez troubles escalated from there with walks and errors that provided Laguna with a four run start. In the second inning, Jones was walked but scored again when Austin Paxson doubled. Grizzlies walked Chris Paul but Erik Peruzzi singled driving in Paxson.  Steven Harrison, a freshman, slammed a double to clear the bases and it was now 8-0. Laguna added three more in the fourth and four in the fifth. The final three runs came in the seventh when Jake Herbert walked. Blake Hester drove a right field ground-rule double that was lost in the outfield hedges. Larry Stewart drove in two runs on a long single to center field and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Zach Graf.  Breakers had 12 hits in the contest.

Grizzlies scored their runs in the sixth inning when Jackson Rees gave up two doubles to start the inning scoring a run. Their second run was scored later in the inning on a long fly to center field. Keaton Jones started the game pitching five shutout innings giving up only three hits striking out eight. Larry Stewart finished the game in the seventh striking out two facing only three batters. Calvary Chapel swept Costa Mesa in a doubleheader on Tuesday to stay four games back of the league-leading Breakers and eliminating the Mustangs from the pennant race.
