Two California surfers, including Laguna Beach resident Mark Ward, this week boarded a solar-powered electric Duffy boat, primarily used in calm bays and lakes and not the open ocean, to travel 350 miles between Santa Barbara and Ensenada, Mexico, to promote a cleaner ocean.

Ward and Billy Dutton developed the non-profit Riding Currents foundation, 6668 N. Coast Highway, to promote reducing use of ocean-polluting plastics.

Their surfing expedition set out on Oct. 7 and the two boaters intend to survey the health of the marine ecosystems while surfing and stopping in Marina Del Rey, Seal Beach and San Diego’s Mission Bay Yacht Club along the way. They expect to dock on Oct. 19.
