Breaker miscues led to early Trojan points in the contest played Friday, Sept. 12, at Guyer Field. Still Laguna was in the contest until the final seconds of the first half when the visitors connected on a one-play 79-yard bomb to kill the Laguna spark.

University took the opening kickoff 56 yards to set up their first drive, a quick two-minute, six-play effort for the game’s initial points. Laguna barely had the ball giving the Trojans excellent field position after fumbling on the squad’s third scrimmage play.

University made it 14-0 with a 25-yard three play drive at the 7:24 mark in the first quarter.

Matt Hayes returned the ensuing kickoff 27 yards sparking an 11-play drive that stalled at the University three. Bruce Knill added his fourth career field goal to conclude the first quarter scoring.

The second quarter was nearly scoreless with Laguna dominating the period until the final seconds when the Trojans had a one-play bomb to shock the Breakers into the intermission.

Laguna’s first three possessions of the second half resulted in turnovers with the second possession a 15-yard fumble on a backfield exchange that University recovered in the end-zone for a score. Laguna’s lone score came on their final possession as Matt Hayes took a 20-yard pass from Jack Simon in coverage to break for the score.

The following week is a home game, Friday, Sept. 26, against a very strong St Margaret’s. Guyer Field and the food trucks are always a great evening. The Breakers football game is broadcast live on radio station KX 93.5.
