Improve Street Safety With Lighting

Editor,

Why is Glenneyre deserted after dusk? It seems people do not use that street because it is dark and prefer the Coast Highway or other streets. I have heard that this street has the most pedestrian accidents in town.

Recently while driving on Glenneyre and crossing Park Avenue I saw a strange, small square-shaped pale blue light; it was emanating from a phone. The person holding it was jaywalking across Glenneyre going west to east. They were in black and the hoodie was pulled very close to their face; they were petite in stature so not much of face was showing.  Despite my driving at 15 mph, I would not had seen the individual if it were not for their phone. The jaywalker was oblivious to what was going on around them.

It is good that the police department has put out letters in our papers about this, but do our young people, do tourists or those working but not living here read our paper? I think not.

I ask that Toni Iseman, who led a successful re-election campaign with support by Village Laguna, to act on her campaign pledge to make Laguna a safe place. I suggest that she start by working with public works to increase the number of streetlights and increase the wattage on Glenneyre. Perhaps a program to provide pedestrian/street safety education directed at the high school level would help. Do it yearly with the support of the school board. I am sure that there are some graphic videos etc. available. I think this would be a good start, don’t you?

Does the village look have to make this street deadly?  People want to use it.
