SUMMER NOTES – Fall Sports Underway

FOOTBALL

Next Thursday, the historic 89th season will open at Chino High School when the Breakers will face the Cowboys to start the season. Chino is one of the oldest high schools in Southern California, opening in 1897. The Cowboys were 6-6 last season, losing in the second round of the D-11 playoffs, and they compete in the 4-team Sierra League with Pomona, Rowland and Covina. The Breakers met Chino only once, with a 42-21 Laguna win in 2021.

Why you should see this Laguna team:

In 89 years of football for Laguna, this is the highest-rated team to start a season. Breakers are ranked #102 out of 375 teams, and for the state, Laguna is ranked #204 out of 1,046 teams. CIF will use the CalPreps ranking system from actual 2023 results for post-season placement.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The summer pre-season concluded with Laguna participating in the 14th annual Queens Court Tournament last weekend, with the Breakers playing in the 16-team elite division won by Mater Dei. The Breakers were missing several starters but were competitive, facing La Canada, San Clemente, J Serra, Santa Margarita, Aliso Niguel and Santiago/Corona. Meg Gardner was the team kill leader, while Madeline Rootlieb led, serving with seven aces. Gardner also led in digs with other strong defensive performances from Coco Black and Morgan Saunders. As expected, Sadie Holmes led in blocking.

The team will scrimmage Aliso Niguel on Aug. 10 and should be at full strength when they open the season at home on Tuesday, Aug. 15, against a strong JSerra squad. Dana Hills is here on Wednesday, Aug. 16 and San Clemente on Aug. 22.

Coaching the lower levels are Laguna alumni Beau Bianchi and Tyler Alter with the JV and Cliff Amsden with the Frosh-Soph.
