Breakers Miss Playoffs
Mesa blasts Laguna 56-30 to End Season
The pre-season favorite, Costa Mesa recovered from early season injuries to win their last seven games including a complete thrashing of the Breakers last Friday night at Guyer Field. The Mustangs led by their talented player, Oronde Crenshaw (20 carries. 250 yards, five touchdowns), scored on their first five possessions of the game and would have had six but missed a 33 yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Breakers were their own worst enemy losing two fumbles and missing their first six pass attempts. Nathan Lancaster concluded his Laguna career as the school’s all-time runner with 21 carries for 208 yards, three touchdowns and three two-point conversions. Nate finished the regular season as Orange County’s leading runner and scorer for 2013 setting Laguna school records for the season in both categories.
In Friday’s contest, Mesa’s first possession was struggling until a lapse in Laguna pass coverage allowed a 46 yard play that put the visitors in scoring position. A 10-yard Crenshaw run and successful kick made it 7-0
Breakers looked sharp on their first possession moving to the Mesa 46 on six plays when Jack Simon was sacked as he attempted a pass that the officials ruled a fumble recovered by the Mustangs rather than an incomplete.
After that, the Breakers failed to get a first down on their next two possessions finally scoring on the squad’s fourth try when Lancaster pulled off a classic touchdown run. Laguna’s final drive of the first half went 58 yards in 13 plays before stalling on downs at the Mesa 22.
Breakers took the kickoff to open the second half Nate Lancaster returned the kick 26 yards to give Laguna great field position. Keaton Martinez ran 26 yards on the first play followed by Andres DeLaRosa then Lancaster for 25 yards and the score. Lancaster made a leaping catch of a Jack Simon pass for the two-point conversion.
It took Mesa only one play to match and Laguna was down 42-14. Breakers next possession stalled after 11 plays and their last one of the quarter was lost on a fumble. In the fourth period, Laguna scored on both possessions including a Simon bomb to Sean Hampton that went for 76 yards, tenth longest in school history.
Laguna ends the season 5-5, 2-3 league finishing tied for fourth. The overtime loss to Calvary on October 24 proved to be the turning point for the squad. Breakers had many opportunities then to put the Eagles away and seal a win and playoff spot. Laguna also benefited when an injury riddled Estancia squad lost 59-14 to the Breakers on October 18 before rallying to sweep Godinez, Saddleback and Calvary to close-out their season.
