Litter Spoils the Beauty of Crystal Cove

Editor,

Just recently my family and I had the pleasure of visiting your beautiful community of Laguna Beach from the east coast. While there we spent a day at the beach in Crystal Cove State Park with its magnificent scenery.

The reason I’m writing is about the condition of the beach itself. On the beach and on the cliffs where wildlife live was litter of every kind, glass and plastic bottles, plastic bags, paper of every kind and even a dirty diaper. But what was most distressing was the amount of litter in the tidal pool where many birds where feeding near the entrance to the beach behind the lifeguard station.

At the exit to the beach, the park provides many litter boxes so there is no excuse for leaving behind so much litter that is hazardous to the beauty of the beach and the wild life that depends of the ecology of the area to survive.

A good solution would be to organize a community trash clean up day or having school children or different community organization come together and clean the park. If that doesn’t work, fines might be in order for those who are so careless with the beauty that nature has provided them.

My family and I look forward to visiting again in the near future.

  1. Dear John,

Crystal Cove is a beautiful beach, and many visitors throughout the year visit there, I realize you are from North Carolina and are not familiar with local governments or city boundaries.
Essentially Crystal Cove is a State Park run but the State of California which recieves revenues from the residents in the form of tax dollars and of the State and visitors like yourself in fees for amenities in the Parks and other Parks in the State Park system.

It is also interesting that most of any trash accumulated there in the park is attributed to visitors from all over the world including the United States and local residents of neighboring cities.

You or others that are concerned about the condition and apperance of the park for health and sanitation reasons, would benifit in contacting: the State of California Park Services, State of California Governor Jerry Brown, or the California Costal Commission.
Or next time you visit the park remember to put litter in its place , and bring at least of piece of trash left by others into the nearest trash receptacle upon every every visit.
