After its absence for several years, the police department is accepting applications for its Citizen Academy, a 12-week course designed to provide community members with a better understanding of the department and to help foster better communications between police personnel and citizens.

The academy starts Thursday, Feb. 9, and will meet from 6 to 9:30 p.m. for 12 consecutive weeks.

The academy will include instruction in the department’s history, investigations, traffic enforcement, gangs, narcotics, neighborhood watch, crime prevention, K-9 and volunteer programs.

There will also be a tour of the station and county jail. Academy members will be given the chance to shoot at the police firing range and participate in mock scenarios.

Applications will be accepted until Jan. 23 and can be obtained by calling the department at (949) 497-0701. Questions? Contact Lt. Darin Lenyi at (949) 497-0375 or email him at [email protected].
