A Laguna Beach resident who returned home to surprise thieves loading his belongings into a rental truck attempted to block their getaway with his Tesla, which was smashed in the process, police said Monday, March 28.

The homeowner who drove into the driveway of his home in the 1900 block of Park Avenue about 7:15 p.m. Thursday, March 24, reported seeing a second burglar flee on foot. Despite a search of the area from the air and on the ground, police were unable to locate either the damaged truck or the thief abandoned by his co-conspirator, Sgt. Tim Kleiser said.

The fleeing truck left a debris trail of both truck parts and the resident’s stolen possessions strewn along Park Avenue, the police log noted.

The homeowner was still tallying the stolen property, but estimated losses of at least $50,000, which included two expensive watches in addition to the damaged car, Kleiser said.
