Stylist Chris McGivern invites the public to take advantage of a cut-a-thon benefit at Furiosa Salon.

Furioso Salon stylist Christopher Lee McGivern recruited his four colleagues to take up their scissors for a cause this coming Sunday, Nov. 11, snipping and trimming in a cut-a-thon that will raise funds for Men Alive, Orange County’s Gay Men’s Chorus.

Patrons are asked for a minimum $30 donation for a cut at Furioso, 302 Forest Ave., open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

McGivern, 37, of Laguna Beach, who only recently auditioned and joined the choir, wants to do his part to contribute to the Laguna Hills-based non-profit begun in 2001 that now has 130 members and 20 staff volunteers. Just half of Men Alive’s annual budget comes from ticket sales.

“Our music and performances are a bridge to bring the gay community to everyone,” said McGivern, styling hair at Furioso for the past three years. Not having sung with a chorus since high school some 20 years ago, McGivern speaks of the overwhelming feeling he had joining the group, “It’s one big family and they welcomed me in.”

“I am trying to do all I can do now that I am a part of this group,” McGivern concludes.

Men Alive’s upcoming performance is set to feature Liza Minnelli Thursday and Friday, Dec. 13 and 14 at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.  Tickets are available now.
