Waves Too Crowded by Surf School Students

Editor,

Okay… the surf school lessons at Hakama Reef (between Anita and Thalia Streets) has gotten out of control and will only get worse every summer.

I am curious to know whether the city has any plans or thoughts on restricting these surf lessons.

Granted, Hakama is a great spot in Laguna to learn how to surf. I learned there at the age of 11 in 1969 (on my own), but it has now become a profit endeavor for these surf schools at the expense of the locals.

As a local, one cannot simply go surf there without the craze of hundreds of beginners learning to surf on any given weekend or holiday weekdays.

As an ex-Laguna Beach lifeguard, we had and still have restrictions in Laguna for scuba diving lessons. The same should be applied to these surf schools. I’m not sure what the solution is or when to restrict the lessons, but something needs to be done. It has gotten way out of control!
