Editor,
As a frequent visitor to Laguna Beach, I’m wondering why residents don’t insist on an enforced slower speed limit through town. I have stayed at numerous accommodations on either side of the highway, taking the sidewalks frequently to dinner, shopping and the beach. Now, there is no way I would ever walk against the light as that is just begging someone to take my life, but while I stand on the sidewalk and wait for the light to turn, I wonder when a speeding car will jump the curb and hit waiting pedestrians. I have come here enough over the years to have read news of people struck and killed while crossing intersections and riding bicycles. One night a few years back, my husband and I were awakened by terrific crashing sounds as a car nearly went into the picture window of a liquor store. So, why not slow it down and make it safer for all?

Dear Mary ,
The pacific coast highway is part of the interstate highway system.
Therefore conforms to the rules of that governing body.
Please write your congressional representative regarding this matter.
I do agree that if you are in a hurry, Laguna Beach is not the place to be.
Caltrans has jurisdiction on PCH through Laguna but don’t follow their own mandate DD-64 to build PCH safe for all roadway users. Dana Point controls their portion of PCH making safety improvements. If Laguna’s city hall had a moral compass they would acknowledge a dismal safety record and improve PCH.
