Youngster Wins Tennis Tourney

Eleven-year-old Sydney Van Alphen recently won the Laguna Niguel Junior Open tennis tournament in the girls 14’s singles division.

The Thurston sixth-grader beat 14-year-old Bettina Olah from San Marcos 7-5 and 6-3 in the final.

Sydney also won in the girls 14s doubles with her friend Emily Maxfield, of Murrieta.

This week, her father Mark Van Alphen reported signing a full sponsorship agreement today with Kai Nitsche, vice president of Dunlop Sports, which will provide Sydney with gear.

About 35 locals, who have supported Sydney financially to help her travel and receive special training, turned out to watch the match.
