Frustrated by Anti-Social Media

Editor,

I read the column by James Utt entitled, “A Luddite’s Lament” in the March 25, 2016 edition.

James is not alone in his lament. I shake my head at all of this high-tech way of communicating.  I love how he wryly describes social media as “anti social media.” Communicating via Facebook or by way of tweets and twitters takes away the human touch, tone and energetic connection.

The princess phone.
The princess phone.

I’m about ready to turn in my iPhone for an “old fashioned” flip phone. Yes, they still make them!  Verizon has one available.  And speaking of old fashioned phones, check out my vintage 1960s rotary dial princess phone, which I’ve been using for years. Not only is it a nice accent piece on my desk, the reception is perfect and the handset cradles my ear so comfortably, quite unlike the flat, awkward feel of an iPhone or a cordless landline.

How about a telecommunications throwback to the ol’ days when we listened to our answering machine messages after a day at the office then had meaningful conversations while curled up on the sofa at the end of the day or over a hearty cup of coffee in the morning before getting the day going? Catching-up over a garbled Bluetooth enabled connection in our cars, or worse, while on a date, is getting outdated.

I’m glad I’m not alone in my frustration!
