Girls Basketball (13-1, 1-0)

Breakers won their seventh straight game with a 61-12 rout of Saddleback (2-11, 0—1) on Tuesday night at Dugger Gym. Breakers were led by freshman Jackie Cenan who became only the fifth player in Laguna history to score 30 or more points in a game.  Laguna traveled to league favorite Estancia (10-6) Thursday, Jan. 10 in their first real test to see if they can compete for the Orange Coast title.  Breakers host Calvary (2-13) next Tuesday, Jan. 15, and Godinez (5-10) on Thursday, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. at Dugger Gym.

Boys Basketball (11-6)

Breakers entered league play this past week facing Saddleback (0-13) on Wednesday, Jan. 9, and travel to Estancia (4-12) on Friday, Jan. 11. Next week Laguna faces Calvary (8-7) at home on Wednesday, Jan. 16 and Godinez (7-10) at home on Friday, Jan. 18. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Boys Soccer (5-0-2)

Breakers tied Woodbridge 2-2 last week in their final non-league match of the season. The squad’s record has earned the team recognition and a No. 10 spot in the CIF poll entering league play this past week. Breakers hosted defending league champion Saddleback (8-1-1) on Wednesday, Jan. 9 and travel to Estancia (5-3-3) Friday, Jan. 11, for their usually contentious match. Next week Laguna hosts Calvary (2-5-0) on Wednesday. Jan. 16, and Godinez (6-1-1) on Friday, Jan. 18.

Girls Soccer (3-6-2. 0-1)

The defending league champions dropped their opening league match of 2013 with a 1-0 loss to Saddleback (7-2-2) this past Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Guyer Field. Breakers faced another tough team at Estancia (5-2-6) on Thursday, Jan. 10.

The Breakers edged their alumni 2-1 in a spirited contest at Guyer Field last week. The young varsity team relied upon conditioning, offensive opportunities and outstanding goal keeping by 10th grade standout Kylie George. The alumni featured a collection of present and past college level players including Clair Rubel, Alex Degarmo, Christina Gardilcic, Sarah Appel, Madeleine Arterburn, Victoria and Christina French, Jackie Csira, Ally Manfrini, Caroline Cannan, Sasha Speare, Wesley Hamchuk and Ryan Bakkum. Both present varsity assistants added their fine play as Courtney Hamchuk shined for the alumni and Amanda Sylvia played in midfield for the varsity.

 

Girls Water Polo (7-3)

Breakers travel to Santa Barbara this weekend playing Dos Pueblos in a non-league match on Thursday, Jan. 10 and participating in the 16-team Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday. Breakers are seeded eighth and open play today (Friday) at Santa Barbara High School against Mater Dei, the top Division II team. The winners/losers of the opening match will face their counterpart from the Foothill-San Clemente match. Breakers edged the Monarchs 9-8 earlier this year. Last year Laguna finished sixth in the tournament with their best finish being fifth place in 2009 and 2010.
