Breakers Win Cluster Meet

The CIF third-ranked Laguna Beach boys and seventh-ranked girls look poised to win their sixth Orange Coast League titles this season after winning the league cluster meet on Sept. 25 at Irvine Regional Park. League finals will be held Wednesday, Oct. 30 on the same course.

The girls’ varsity placed their five scorers in the top 10 overall to edge out Godinez 25-34.  The boys’ varsity top five finished among the top 15 to beat Godinez 42-51.

Leading the way for the girls was freshman Kirsten Landseidel, who finished second with a time of 18:53. She was followed closely by a tight pack of four Breakers, led by sophomore Pearl Shoemaker (19:04, 3), junior Janie Crawford (19:25, 5), freshman Bailey Shoemaker (19:29, 6), and senior Brielle Budroe (19:40, 9). Juniors Solveig Erngren (20:42, 18) and Carlee Ressler (20:46, 19) rounded out the top seven.

Senior Casiano Koprowski paced the boys scoring five with a time of 15:51, good enough for fourth overall. He was followed by junior Grant Barton (16:20, 7), sophomores Cale Airey (16:32, 8) and Mason Pitz (16:35, 9), and senior Ian Ring (16:59, 14). Junior Liam Corrigan (17:09, 16) and sophomore Penn Nielson (17:43, 23) completed Laguna’s top seven.

The JV girls swept their race, taking the top six spots overall to crush Godinez 15-48. Senior Audrey Rodriguez (20:08) finished first, followed by sophomores Taylor Alvarez (20:18, 2), Lauryn Alvarez (20:19, 3) and Allison Konno (20:47, 4), and freshman Sabrina Flagstad (21:02, 5). Juniors Annie Brown (21:03, 6) and Rachel Hunter (22:05, 13) rounded out the top seven for the Breakers.

The boys Frosh/Soph team of sophomores Carter Fraser (17:28, 2) and James Marshall (18:02, 6), freshman Jake Mangus (18:15, 9), and sophomores Ryan Gee (18:18, 10) and Sterling Marshall (18:22, 13) lost to Saddleback by one, 39-40.  Freshmen Ray Hunter (18:26, 14) and Sam Dameshek (18:29, 16) finished sixth and seventh for Laguna.

Laguna Hills Invitational

Neither varsity squad competed at the Dana Hills Invitational last Saturday, Sept. 28 at Dana Hills High School, although a team of Laguna freshmen boys finished tied for fourth with Sage Hill 130-130.

Sam Dameshek led the way, finishing 18th with a time of 18:46. The remainder of the scoring five was Clancy Copper (18:58, 21), Tyler Jackson (19:05, 26), Ryan Whitlock (19:12, 30), Liam Duncan (19:33, 35).  William Kramer (19:55, 43) and Liam Yates (20:42, 55) rounded out the top seven.

The Breakers next compete in the Palos Verdes Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Palos Verdes High.
