Beverly Factor’s winning entry.

Artwork lined the walls of City Hall as a large crowd attended a reception on Thursday, Nov. 3,for Laguna Beach’s fifth annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibit.

Beverly Factor’s underwater photo took the $1,000 first prize, followed by Suzette Rosenthal and Gary Zuercher, awarded $500 and $250, respectively.

The mixed media show ran the entire gamut of materials and styles.  There were beautiful Asian works, including delicately painted botanicals. From the sublime to the extreme, two artists chose the 2011 Japan earthquake as their theme.  There were beautifully executed oils and watercolors, human studies and landscape, literal and abstract.  Photography, though not plentiful, was very well represented.

Juror Richard Chang, an arts critic for the Orange County Register, reviewed 182 submissions from throughout the county, selecting 41 for the show. He presented the awards with Arts Commission chair Mary Ferguson.  Also present was Arts Commissioner Lisa Mansour and Sian Poeschl, the city’s cultural arts manager.

“We are excited to offer such opportunities for artists in Orange County as it highlights the wealth of talent of our artists,” Ferguson said.

Honorable mention awards went to Hal Briscoe, Mary Jungsun Byun, Gregory Gallardo and Paul Gardner.

The exhibition will be on display through Nov. 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
